Historic Trades Specialist

Heritage Park has an immediate opportunity for the seasonal role of Historic Trades Specialist. Under the direction of the Public Programming Coordinator and in cooperation and consultation with the Facilities and Maintenance Department, this position supports the Heritage Skills Preservation initiative which enables the continued operation and interpretation of our historical trade sites. Working alongside Journeyman Trades Interpreters, the Historic Trades Specialist assists with the repairs and maintenance of operating equipment, spring preparation and fall shut down, and mentoring of new staff. This position also provides interpretation in the Trade sites and supports other interpretive activities within the Park on an as-required basis.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentors and assists Trades Interpreters and Operations staff, in operating, maintaining and repairing the historical equipment in the trades exhibits in Heritage Park (Strathmore Standard, Bruderheim Windmill, Shont’s Grain Elevator, Flett’s Blacksmith Shop, Dingman Oil Well and Atlas Lumber)
  • Supports the daily and yearly operations of the Trades Exhibits by maintaining track of inventory, ordering supplies, keeping coal bins stocked, and assessing repair needs
  • Prepares trade sites for spring use and ensures proper fall shut down of sites
  • Ensures the proper care, handling, and security of artifacts and other objects associated with the assigned exhibit(s)
  • Assists with training new staff and provide support and mentoring to the Trades Interpreters to aid in ensuring quality programming and safe operation of the sites
  • Conducts research to support trades interpretation and aids in developing new programming and training initiatives for these sites
  • Provides customer service, information and interpretation to guests in the Trades Exhibits (or other Interpretive sites), attends planning or Lead Hand meetings on an as needed basis, and when not otherwise engaged in training, repair or maintenance activities
  • Assists with minor repair and maintenance needs in other exhibits as required
  • Performs other duties as required

Job Requirements:

  • Post-secondary training in mechanical related fields or at least five years of practical experience in fixing and repairing metal, wood, and mechanical equipment and materials
  • Previous customer service related experience and/or experience at Heritage Park is an asset
  • Some post-secondary education and/or a keen interest in and knowledge of the history of Western Canadian settlement, historical interpretation, and historical trades is an asset
  • Must be mechanically inclined or have a mechanical aptitude and demonstrated skills in fixing or repairing equipment
  • Must have problem solving skills and the ability to use mature judgment
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Proven ability to work well with others
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required
     

Working Conditions and Hours of Work:

  • Approximately two days per week in the off season (January to April and September to December). Five days per week from May to end of Labour Day (includes weekends); hours may vary
  • May be required to stand for long periods and be exposed to extremes in temperature
  • Climbing stairs or ladders is required, observing all necessary safety precautions
  • Appropriate costuming will be provided by Heritage Park. The Costume Policy must be adhered to at all times
