Senior Interpreter Permanent, Full Time

Heritage Park has an immediate opening for a full-time Senior Interpreter. Under the direction of the Public Programming Coordinator, this position will deliver dynamic interpretation of the Gasoline Alley Museum and its premier collection of vintage automobiles and transportation related artifacts, representing the transportation and social history of the 1900’s to 1950’s. This position will also support other interpretive activities within Heritage Park’s Historical Village (representing western Canadian history from the 1860’s to 1910).  If you love vintage cars and trucks, western Canadian history, teaching or sharing stories with people of all ages, this job is for you!
 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Delivers interpretation of exhibits using techniques that may include one on one or small group interpretation, demonstrations, interactive activities, guided tours, First Person role acting, storytelling or other related presentation techniques
  • Prepares exhibits and associated artifacts and activity materials for interpretation use
  • Conducts research to support daily interpretation of exhibits and new initiatives
  • Develops interpretive activities and displays for existing and new exhibits
  • Leads pre-booked guided tours of the Park and Gasoline Alley as needed (i.e. bus tours, other groups)
  • Assists in the development and delivery of advertised themed activity days and value added interpretive programming
  • Performs other Museum duties as required such as acting in the capacity of Lead Hand, assisting with training, mentoring and supervising seasonal staff and volunteers, interpretive planning, and scheduling staff and tours

Job Requirements:

  • Post-Secondary education and/or training/experience in related areas (Western Canadian history, historical interpretation, museum studies, education/teaching, tour guiding, etc)
  • Post secondary education or experience working with children, youth or adults is considered an asset
  • At least two years’ experience in teaching or interpretation using a variety of techniques, and in the development and delivery of engaging activities for children, families or adults
  • Prior experience supervising and mentoring staff
  • A keen interest in and knowledge of the history of automobiles, transportation, mechanics, or the social history of the 1930’s to 50’s
  • Excellent verbal and written communication as well as public relations skills; comfortable working with people of all ages
  • Organized, flexible, adaptable, and capable of independent study, exhibit mature judgement, and have a proven ability to work well with others in a team

Hours of Work:

  • The schedule will generally be five consecutive days per week, including at least one weekend day
