Trades Interpreter (Seasonal)

Heritage Park is looking for mechanically-inclined individuals to interpret and learn to operate historic equipment in the following trade sites: Strathmore Standard, Shonts Grain Elevator, Atlas Lumber Company, and Flett’s Blacksmith Shop.     

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Interprets the history of the exhibit while demonstrating the working machinery and/or techniques
• Ensure the proper care and handling of artifacts, equipment and tools

For each site specifically, the following tasks are involved:

Strathmore Standard
• Operates linotype, platen press, and Wharfedale press

Flett’s Blacksmith Shop
• Demonstrates historic blacksmithing techniques on a historic forge

Shonts Grain Elevator
• Operates a wooden grain elevator

Atlas Lumber Company
• Provides hands-on carpentry opportunities for guests, demonstrates historic carpentry skills and tools, and interprets the building history of Calgary

Job Requirements: 

  • High School diploma required; some post-secondary experience preferred
  • Experience with historic printing equipment, historic engines, blacksmithing, working or delivering grain to elevators, or historic carpentry preferred
  • Previous experience with interpretation, teaching or public speaking is preferred

Hours of Work:

  • Full-time hours available May to Labour Day, with weekend work during September and October (until Thanksgiving)
  • Part-time hours also available throughout the season
