There was once a train so powerful they said it pulled a nation forward
Journey of a Lifetime, Presented by BMO Financial Group
Calgary, AB – On July 1, 2017, Canada’s 150th anniversary of confederation and Heritage Park’s 53rd anniversary, an important piece of Canadian history will come to life at Heritage Park Historical Village. Journey of a Lifetime, Presented by BMO Financial Group will share the stories of the people, places and journey involved in the largest wave of immigration in Canadian history.
The CP Railway united Canada as a nation and no other rail car did more to settle the west than the Colonist car. Heritage Park is home to one of the oldest, and last remaining Colonist cars in the country. Its story is a tangible reminder of the hopes, dreams and hardships of Canada’s earliest immigrants. While this 1905 wooden rail car undergoes an onsite restoration, an immersive exhibit and performance, Journey of a Lifetime, will provide a compelling experience that draws parallels between the struggles of early settlers and those faced by new immigrants today.
Every Canda Day Heritage Park hosts an official citizenship ceremony welcoming new Canadians who choose to make this country their home. This Canada Day, Heritage Park and Quest Theatre Society will honour those who came before, from as far away as Ukraine, France, Britain and Asia, to cultivate and settle a vast unknown.
The family-friendly performance is the story of a few of those courageous and hopeful immigrants who arrived through Eastern ports in 1910 and crossed Canada by Colonist train. Travel along with characters Yosyp Lebedovich, the Cousineau family and Nellie Cole as they face the challenges and rewards of following a dream.
The accompanying exhibit provides an opportunity for visitors to record and share their own immigration stories, to learn about BMO’s role in settling Western Canada and to delve deeper into this timely Canadian story. Celebrate the diversity and iron resolve of all who came to carve this mosaic which we call home. For them it truly was the Journey of a Lifetime.
The exhibit will be open from July 1 to July 16 in Heritage Park’s Railway Car Shop while the performance will run twice daily, with the exception of Tuesdays in the Canmore Opera House. Journey of a Lifetime, Presented by BMO Financial Group is included with regular Heritage Park admission.
In September the exhibit and performance will go on a 12 week national tour, beginning in Halifax and ending in Vancouver. For more information visit http://www.heritagepark.ca/park-information/journey-of-a-lifetime.html
