Copithorne Barn

This sturdily built log barn was constructed by Oliver and Bill Ellis, circa 1907, at Oliver's homestead in the Jumping Pound Creek area, about 40 kilometres west of Calgary. The brothers were part of an 11-member family that relocated from Packenham, Ontario, in 1886, and Oliver and Bill both turned to ranching in the Jumping Pound area.

Skilled axemen, the brothers built their stable out of logs, using 18-inch steel pins salvaged from a former irrigation dam, and were soon building log stables all over the district. Oliver died in 1940, and his lands were purchased in 1942 by the Copithorne family, which donated the barn to Heritage Park in 1964.
