Narrow Gauge Railway
Narrow gauge railways replaced horses, mules and bull teams as the primary method of transportation in and around Alberta's numerous coal mines. Three locomotives make up this Heritage Park exhibit.
The eight-ton, compressed air locomotive, nicknamed Jumbo, was used for 40 years at the Crowsnest Pass Coal & Coke Company at Michel, B.C., before being presented to Heritage Park as a gift in 1965. The six-ton locomotive was used in Canmore for nearly 80 years, before Canmore Mines Ltd. donated it to Heritage Park in 1979, along with some coal cars which had been converted into inclined passenger cars to carry miners up or down a slope to a mine's entrance. Locomotive No. 3, a coal-burning steam engine, was used by CNP to transport coal from its mine entrance to a tipple, and was given to Heritage Park in 1965.More Attractions & Exhibits View Interactive Map
