'Coal in Your Stocking' - A Holiday Musical
With echoes of A Christmas Carol, hits at Grimm’s Fairy Tales, a sprinkle of holiday cheer all topped with an historical setting, this fun, silly and sometimes dark “underground” musical is a great launch into the festive season for everyone!
We’ve all been threatened by it: “Be good or you’ll get coal in your stocking!”. Most of the time it has reminded us to sit up straight, eat our vegetables or stop hitting our brother. But for Joe and the other miners, they only wish they could get coal for Christmas.
Coal In Your Stocking runs each day of Once Upon A Christmas with performances at 11am, 12pm, 2pm and 3pm in the Canmore Opera House. Free with admission.
Dining and Concessions
The Railway Cafe, Wainwright Hotel Bar Room and Club Cafe will be serving a variety of lunch options, baked goods and snacks. The Alberta Bakery will offer a selection of fresh baked holiday treats and Shepard Station will offer hot drinks and snacks. For a special treat, the Selkirk Grille offers elegant dining, lunch and dinner service.

The popularity of Once Upon a Christmas can result in line-ups at favourite locations, especially during the afternoon. Here is our insider tip of key spots to visit in the morning, for a shorter wait time:
- Stop at Gasoline Alley (now included with admission!) first. You’ll find Santa crafts & games here.
- Take a wagon ride in the morning light. It’s a beautiful time to go dashing through the snow!*
- Kids, go shopping early! Don’t wait too long to find gifts for your family at the Kids’ Only Store.
- Have sugar for breakfast. The candy store and bakery are always popular. Stock up in the morning to avoid lineups!
After 3 pm, tickets are required for wagon rides. Limited tickets are available at the wagon loading area after 3 pm. Wagon ride tickets are free.
